Q: Should I take vitamins to supplement my health and prevent disease?

A: I have been skeptical about the use of vitamins for years, which has been a shared suspicion of many nutritionist. The school of thought to get your vitamins from a natural source, such as fruits and vegetables, always made more sense to me. Sure, I understand that we don’t all eat fruits and vegetables regularly as we should, but still, we are not necessarily vitamin deficient unless we have a documented medical condition that may be causing it. Further, vitamins are not approved by the Food and Drug Administration, so, like a box of chocolates “You never know what you are going to get.”

Another risk, is that taking too many vitamins may cause “hypervitaminosis,” which can create a dangerous imbalance in your body.

On the flip side, according to Dr. Gourmet.com, women who are or may become pregnant and those who eat a vegan diet still require certain vitamin supplements to stay healthy.

With that being said, please stop spending money on vitamins and put it towards good, fresh food.
